Solving maths problems
Challenges in applying reasoning and strategies to tackle unfamiliar or multi-step problems, often due to gaps in understanding or planning skills
- Make sure I know the skills I need before solving a problem so that I am set up for success
- Check if reading words is hard for me and help by using colour coding or reading out loud so that I can focus on the maths.
- Teach me the steps to solve a problem, like reading the question, picking out important parts, working it out and checking, so that I know what to do.
- Show me how new learning is linked to things I already know so that I can connect ideas.
- Let me look at wrong answers as well as right ones so that I can spot mistakes.
- Give me chances to use maths in real life, like paying for shopping, telling time or planning a trip, so that I can see why it matters.
- Stick with one method until I’m good at it before showing me a new way so that I feel confident.
