Proprioceptive differences

Ability to sense own body and movements.

  • Observe how I move and ask me about it. If I rock on my chair or find it hard to stay seated, it’s not because I’m being naughty, it’s just how my body tries to feel okay.
  • Give me chances to move in ways that help me feel calm and focused. (e.g. running, jumping, lifting heavy things, or doing jobs around the classroom (like handing out books) really help.
  • Let me know that it’s okay to rock, spin, or move in certain ways as long as it’s not stopping me or others from learning.
  • Sometimes I lean on things because my body is looking for more sensory input. Things like pushing against a table or wall help me feel more grounded.
  • Let me try different seating options like:
    • Standing desks
    • Resistance bands on chair legs
    • Wobble cushions
    • Spinning or rocking chairs
  • Include activities from my sensory checklist throughout the day to help me to regulate. Consider adding these activities into sensory circuits or gym trails.
